How we research, and where our figures come from.
Every regulation, dimension and cost figure on this site is traced back to a primary source. We reconcile figures across the four UK nations before we publish anything.
Our method
- Start from the primary regulation for each UK nation (see below). We do not paraphrase secondary blogs.
- Reconcile the four nations before publishing a single figure so readers know what applies where.
- Cross-check dimensions against BS 5395-1 and against what we see on real surveys when specifying the same detail.
- Peer review by a second specialist before the page goes live. The last-updated date is shown on every content page.
- Re-check at least every 12 months, or immediately if a regulation changes. The "Last updated" date is honest.
Primary sources we rely on
- Approved Document K — Protection from falling, collision and impact (England)
- Technical Handbooks (Scotland) — Building Standards Division
- Approved Documents (Wales) — Welsh Government Building Regulations
- Technical Booklet H — Stairs, ramps, guarding and protection from impact (Northern Ireland)
- BS 5395-1 — Stairs, Code of practice for the design of stairs
