Independent staircase specialists. We measure and source, we do not make or fit.
The Stairs is written by The Stair Guys, independent UK staircase measuring and sourcing specialists. We survey the real space, specify the right stair, and source it from the right maker. We wrote this guide to help homeowners buy well.
Why we are qualified to write this
We spend our working weeks in customers' hallways with a tape measure and on the phone to makers. The measurements, tolerances, regulations and material choices in this guide are the same ones we work with every week. Nothing here is generic content: every figure is one we have used or checked ourselves before signing off a real staircase order.
Independent of the manufacturers
We do not manufacture stairs and we are not owned by a stair brand. We source from a panel of UK makers on the merits a homeowner actually cares about: cost, fit, safety and longevity. No stair of our own to push, and no commissions to steer your choice.
Honest disclosure
We are not pretending to be a neutral third party. The people who wrote this guide are the people you can hire to measure and source your staircase. We do not make or fit the stair ourselves; we specify it and source it from a maker we trust, and we hand fitting off to a competent installer. If another route is a better fit for you, we will say so.

Who we are for, and who we are not
If price is the only thing that matters to you, we will say it plainly: The Stair Guys are probably not the right choice, and we would rather tell you that now than pretend otherwise. Here is the honest reason.
We come to site and measure the real space, instead of building off a form. That is a cost.
We take responsibility for your drawings and sign them off with the manufacturer, so the risk of a stair that does not fit or does not comply is not left sitting on you. That is a cost.
We will not deal with manufacturers who import most of their timber and say nothing about where it has been. That is a cost.
A proper service comes with a cost. None of it is dear for what it is, but it is not the cheapest number on the table, and it is not meant to be.
So if the lowest possible price is what you are after, use this site all you like, it is here to be useful to everyone, and everything on it is free. But for the job itself, we will not be the cheapest, and we are comfortable with that.
How we write and review
Every guide is drafted by a working specialist, then reviewed by a second before it goes live. Figures are cited back to primary sources (the Approved Documents and their devolved-nation equivalents) rather than to other blogs. See how we research for the full method.
