Loft stair headroom: how much you need, drawn out
A loft conversion stair needs headroom measured vertically from the pitch line. The standard is 2m, but a loft conversion gets a reduced allowance of 1.9m at the centre and 1.8m at the side. It is tightest where the stair passes the trimmer and again up by the roof slope, and it matters both above the stair and beneath it.
Loft conversion stairs: where they go and which type to choose
The usual place for a loft stair is directly over the existing staircase, keeping the run of the house. The type is driven by the space: a straight or winder flight where there is room, a spiral or space-saver where there is not. A loft stair also brings fire rules and eats space on the floor below.
