Stairs: the most overlooked safety feature in the house
Stairs are one of the most common places people are hurt at home, sending thousands of under-fives to hospital each year and a leading cause of serious falls in the over-65s. You would not lowball a car seat, yet the staircase you use every day is the thing most often value-engineered.
Stair gates: choosing and fitting them safely
At the top of the stairs use a screw-fit stair gate, not a pressure-fit one, because a pressure-fit gate can be pushed out and is a fall risk at the top. Pressure-fit is fine at the bottom. To fix a gate to spindles or a newel without drilling into them, use a banister fitting kit that clamps on.
