Building Control approval for a new or replacement staircase
Whether a new or replacement staircase needs Building Control approval, how the process works in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, what a completion certificate is, and how to fix work done without sign-off.
Do I need building regs or planning permission to replace a staircase?
Replacing a staircase like-for-like in the same position is generally not controlled work, so it usually does not need building regulations approval or planning permission. But change the rise, going or position, move it, or open up the stairwell, and it becomes a material alteration that does need building control.
